Food revolution moves on to Facebook

Food evolution EU, the Greens/EFA Facebook page has launched with an engaging poster collection. The „Back the Right Horse“ posters are an amusing visual play on the contrasting views many have to beef and horsemeat – definitely a campaign image that has real potential to raise awareness of the issue and Food Revolution EU.

The attention Europe’s food chain has received over recent weeks has only served to highlight the range of issues affecting our food security and safety. The Greens/EFA have worked on food security for a long time, and have now created a Facebook campaign page, Food Revolution EU.

Europe’s food supply has been a constant concern for the European Green parties, with repeated calls for improved conditions across the board – from the farmers to the food producers, from the retailers to the consumers.

While the media has focused on the recent horsemeat debacle, the Food Revolution EU Facebook page presents a wider range of concerns. Thedeclining bee population and the pending two year ban on the use of neonicotinoid insecticides might be instrumental in rescuing an essential bee population that has been decimated over recent years. Overfishing in European waters has been a constant Green issue and now there has been an advance in developing a sustainable fishery system – including banning the practice of discards and employing more scientific research in policy development. Something the Greens have pursued relentlessly. Of course, GMO foods has been on the Green’s agenda for years and this Facebook page offers a great opportunity to increase both awareness of the issue and the Green policies for change.

European consumers are increasingly aware of the food they are being offered, the quality of the products and the pressures on farmers to make a decent living providing an essential, in every sense of the word, product. The open reaction to the race to the lowest price structure that has dominated food supply to date has brought consumer backlash and anger – and an increased demand for both quality control and fair prices for all concerned.
